Thinking of Becoming an Indonesian Migrant Worker? Here’s the Procedure According to Act No. 18 of 2017!

Hello everyone! Who among you dreams of working abroad, becoming an Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI)? Probably many of you! Working overseas is often a dream for many, offering new experiences and, of course, the hope of better earnings. But don't just head off without a plan! There are mandatory procedures to follow to ensure your safety and protect your rights. This time, we're going to talk about the PMI registration procedures according to Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers. Let's dive in!

Why Follow Official Procedures?

It's really important for you to know that Law No. 18 of 2017 was created to protect us as prospective PMIs. In the past, there were many cases of fraud or PMIs being stranded because they left without clear procedures. With this law, the government aims to ensure that every PMI placement process is transparent, safe, and, of course, compliant with regulations. So, don't try illegal routes; the risks are huge!

Steps to Register as an Official PMI

This registration process can be described as phased. So, prepare yourself well!

1. Self-Registration

Initially, you must register personally at the local district/city manpower office (Disnaker). There, you will fill out a registration form and submit the required documents. What documents are needed? Usually, they include:

  • Identity Card (KTP)
  • Family Card (KK)
  • Birth certificate
  • Letter of permission from parents/guardian/husband/wife (if you are married)
  • Latest educational diploma
  • Competency certificate (if any)
  • Health certificate from a doctor

Don't worry if anything is unclear; the officers at Disnaker will definitely help you!

2. Training and Competency Enhancement

Well, this is another important part. After registering, you will usually be directed to participate in training according to the type of job you are interested in and the destination country. This training can include language, technical skills, and cultural adaptation. The goal is clear: to prepare you for the destination country and equip you with sufficient skills. This training can be facilitated by the government or registered training institutions.

3. Job Placement

After successfully completing training and obtaining a competency certificate (if required), you will enter the job placement stage. This process can be through:

  • The Government: This means you are placed directly by the government through existing official programmes. This is the safest and most guaranteed route.
  • Indonesian Migrant Worker Placement Company (P3MI): These are private companies that have obtained permission from the government to place PMIs. Make sure the P3MI you choose is official and registered! Don't make the wrong choice. You can check the list at the Ministry of Manpower or the Ministry/Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers.

4. Travel Document Processing

Once everything is in order, it's time to process travel documents such as your passport and work visa. This process is usually assisted by the P3MI or handled directly by the government. Make sure all these documents are original and valid!

5. Final Departure Briefing (PAP)

Before departing, you are required to attend a Final Departure Briefing (PAP). In this PAP, you will be given the latest information about your rights and obligations as a PMI, the culture of the destination country, important contact numbers for emergencies, and other things you need to know before flying. Don't underestimate this PAP; the information here can be very helpful when you are there!

Remember This!

  • Never be tempted by illegal offers: Shortcuts or unofficial channels are dangerous and very detrimental to you. Always follow the established procedures.
  • Seek as much information as possible: Don't hesitate to ask Disnaker, BP2MI (Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency), or other official sources.
  • Beware of fraud: Many unscrupulous individuals exist. Ensure the P3MI you choose is legal and registered.
  • Your rights are protected: With official procedures, you have clear legal protection.

So, for those of you interested in becoming a PMI, now you know the general outline of the procedures, right? Hopefully, this information is useful, and best of luck in achieving your dreams abroad!
